The Region

Bass Coast Shire is home to beautiful beaches, world-class events, amazing natural attractions and great food and wine.

The beautiful coastline alternates between rugged cliffs and endless beaches. Explore fishing villages and holiday towns which exude an away-from-it-all ambiance.  Venturing further inland you’ll find quaint towns, boutique wineries and local producers proud of their fare and more than happy to show you around.  You can experience all this on long summer days – ideal for enjoying a lazy day at the beach, or rugged winters – perfect for indoor indulgence.

Grantville

Grantville is the first town you will come across on your journey from Melbourne to Bass Coast. The green rolling hills showcase vineyards, unique nature experiences and direct access to the Westernport Bay for water activities or just strolling the foreshore.  The Village provides local conveniences with a pharmacy bakery, newsagent, hardware, local dining, ambulance station, doctors, Council office with a nurse practitioner available and public transport virtually at the village door

Wonthaggi

Located between Phillip Island and Inverloch, Wonthaggi is Bass Coast’s regional hub and is most famous for its old coal mining history.

The town is best known for its historic State Coal Mine that operated from 1910 to 1968. With tours running daily, the Mine offers a fascinating insight into the difficult working conditions of Wonthaggi coal miners.  The coal is long gone today, but Wonthaggi has reinvented itself as the commercial and retail hub of Bass Coast and South Gippsland. The town brims with a range of medical facilities including the region’s main hospital, shops, eateries, supermarkets, entertainment facilities and accommodation

Mornington Peninsula

Dine by the fireside, indulge in freshly roasted coffee, admire the latest art exhibitions, visit a winter market, sample local wine at a small cellar door, hunt for truffles, stay at a cosy bed and breakfast, take your taste buds on a trip to Italy with wood fired pizzas, gather your friends and set out on the Beer Cider Spirits Trail or take a scenic drive. You can do it all on the Mornington Peninsula!
